Sports Photography Etiquette: Respecting Boundaries & Ensuring Child Safety
As a youth sports photographer, it is important to be aware of the ethical considerations and guidelines surrounding photographing young athletes. These considerations will help promote the safety, well-being, and privacy of the children you photograph.
At Sports Start Photography, we want to ensure you are well-informed about photographing young athletes ethically. That’s why we’ve put together some guidelines for you to follow during your photography sessions.
Obtain Consent
Obtaining consent from the athlete’s parents or guardians is vital to ensuring a smooth photography session. You should also follow league policies and their specific guidelines for how the photography will be used. If you wish to use any photography for marketing or other purposes, explain this clearly to parents and guardians and obtain their permission.
Respect Privacy
No matter what type of photoshoot is taking place, it’s important to always respect the privacy of the individuals being photographed. Be sure to consider their feelings before photographing them, ensuring they are comfortable with every aspect of the session.
Build Trust
Building trust between students, their parents, and yourself is a good way to ensure a smooth photography session. Talk to them, share your experience and show your work, all while maintaining a calm and cheerful demeanor to keep your subjects comfortable and happy. Building a positive rapport is also a great way to ensure repeat business.
Be Mindful of Online Sharing
As mentioned, if you wish to use any photographs for marketing purposes, you must obtain permission from the parents or guardians beforehand. When you upload your photos for the parents to see, ensure that your galleries are password-protected so only those with the password can access the photos.
Focus on Team Spirit
Student-athletes may love their sport but may not love their picture taken. Focus on team spirit and help the athlete shine in their photos by coaching them. Emphasize camaraderie and sportsmanship. Always maintain a positive atmosphere when working with the students.
Avoid Undue Pressure
Do not put undue pressure on the students while taking their pictures. Respect their focus on the sport and their team rather than guiding them into an uncomfortable situation by forcing a smile or a pose they don’t like. Respect their focus on their sport.
Report Concerns
If you notice any other adults exhibiting inappropriate behavior, always report your concerns. If you are worried about something, you can always contact league officials or appropriate authorities.
Education and Communication
Clear communication with parents, league officials, and students should always be a priority. Provide information to the parents about your role as the photographer and build trust between the parties to ensure smooth photography sessions.
No Inappropriate Poses
Do not have your athletes pose in any way that can be deemed inappropriate. Also, ensure that the athlete is comfortable with the pose before snapping the picture. Allow them to contribute to the poses so they are comfortable.
