Sports Photography Secrets: Summer Photoshoots

Summertime in Minnesota means hot weather and sunny days. Between sweating and managing the light sources, there are many factors to consider when setting up a summer photoshoot. As sports photographers, Sports Star Photography has seen its share of summer photoshoots and has devised a few ways to streamline the process.

Grab your water bottle and your camera as we explore how to manage a summertime sports photoshoot effectively.

Pre-Shoot Preparation

Setting up a photoshoot for success starts way before the session even begins.

Scheduling

When we schedule a sports photoshoot in the summer, we always start with early morning or late afternoon time slots, as these are the coolest parts of the day. We will also plan backup dates in case of rain or other inclement weather.

Scout the Location

Before a photoshoot, it’s important to scout the location during the times that you would be photographing. Check for shady areas and ensure there are some nice grassy areas for the student to pose.

Prepare Equipment

Before photographing on a hot summer day, ensure your equipment can handle the heat. Use weather-resistant gear that can withstand high heat and potential water splashes. One tip is to bring cooling devices with you, such as battery-powered fans, cooling towels, or misting systems.

Plan a Hydration Station

Bring along cold water or ask your client to provide cold water bottles for yourself and the students. Staying hydrated is essential for everyone’s health. It’s also a good idea to have photography-ready sunscreen on hand to protect everyone’s skin.

During the Photography Session

The photography session is the place to show off organization and efficiency skills. Let’s look at some ways to simplify a sports photography session.

Efficient Workflow

Make sure you arrange groups of students and have a clear sequence to minimize waiting time in the heat. Have the students or parents sign up for time slots and encourage them to arrive ten minutes early to avoid delays.

Pre-plan poses and set-ups to reduce the time needed for each pose. If you have multiple poses, ensure each one is ready to go before the next student arrives.

Take Breaks in Shade

Don’t forget to schedule yourself some breaks during the day. Relax in a shady area and drink plenty of water. Encourage the students to wait in shaded areas and drink water as well. You can also use umbrellas or tents to create shade if none is available.

Managing Sweat and Heat

Plan ahead to bring blotting materials to the photoshoot, such as towels or blotting papers, to help students manage sweat. In addition, you can bring cooling sprays to refresh their faces and reduce shine caused by sweat.

Health and Safety

Keep a first aid kit on hand just in case something happens during your session.

Maintain Communication

During the photography session, maintain constant communication with the students and parents, ensuring everyone is comfortable. If any student shows signs of heat exhaustion or dehydration, encourage them to take a break and come back later, if possible. Should anything go wrong, be prepared to adjust the schedule and poses on the fly. Encourage students to tell you if they are feeling dizzy or lightheaded.
